Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha and Razan Abu-Salha had big ideas for how they wanted to help the world. One of Deah’s last facebook posts was of an evening where he and Yusor were giving food and free dental supplies to the homeless in downtown Durham. Razan, was a regular at Raleigh’s Moore Square, not only with sandwiches for the homeless but also special messages she tucked into the sustenance. The total of the last five drives has translated into over a quarter of a million meals donated to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina for those in need.

Publix Food for Sharing program gives the customer the chance to donate food to help the hungry. You can choose one of three donation amounts, and Publix will donate the food in that bundle to local food banks. NC Legal Feeding Frenzy is an annual joint program of the NCBA Young Lawyers Division and Feeding the Carolinas food banks. It aims to fight hunger across North Carolina by uniting the legal community in support of local food banks.

National Nutrition Month® is an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. During the month of March, they invite everyone to focus on the importance of making informed food choices, developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
Here at the Food Bank, our Nutrition Education Team puts together a National Nutrition Month® calendar with 31 bite-size ideas you can incorporate into your personal wellness plan.
With schools out due to COVID-19, there are active locations across our service area providing free grab-and-go meals for children. We will be updating the list as often as needed.
In addition, Sheetz has announced they are offering free Kidz Meal Bagz at these locations.
- Food will be distributed by volunteers at curbside or other designated area to minimize safety concerns.
- Social distancing is to be enforced by all.
- The food will be placed in safe and sanitized food containers.
- You will not be required to show ID.
- Children do not have to be present with you to pick up food.
Any organizations interested in filling a need and setting up meal pick up location(s) in our service area can submit a request to serve meals for kids.

Technology companies and organizations across the Food Bank’s 34- county service area are invited to raise meals in a friendly competition to fight hunger for bragging rights, an exclusive volunteer opportunity and a trophy!

- The competition runs from April 1st to May 1st, 2020
- After registering, you will receive an email with a unique URL to your own “virtual food drive” fundraising page. Share this link with coworkers, teammates, friends, family and even on social media! Every dollar donated provides 5 meals for people facing food insecurity!
- Want to hold a physical food drive as well? Visit our food and fund drive page for information on drop-off locations and collection boxes. You can also download donation signs and a list of our most-needed items. Every 1.2 pounds of food is equal to 1 meal for a neighbor in need.
- Food donations must be dropped off at one of our branches by 12:00pm on Friday, May 1st in order to be counted in the competition.
- Bytes for Bites will have two winners: most meals raised overall, and most meals raised per employee.

On Thursday, April 2, ABC11 is hoping you’ll be one of those heroes and give to the ABC11 Together Virtual Food Drive benefiting the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina. We’re coming together to help those who are suddenly struggling due to closures related to the coronavirus pandemic. All day Thursday, on ABC11 Eyewitness News, we’ll bring you on-air stories and information on available resources for you and your family. We will also ask those that can, to donate to the drive on abc11.com.
90% of the Food Bank’s surveyed disaster relief pantries and soup kitchens across central and eastern NC have already seen a significant increase in families and individuals visiting their sites for help. “In our 40 years of serving the community, this is a crisis unlike any we’ve faced,” said Peter Werbicki, President & CEO of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. “We’re shifting our operations and how we serve people to try to meet this unprecedented need, and do it in a way that ensures we can serve people for the long haul.”
There’s a lot of uncertainty going around with COVID-19, but there’s also a lot of hope. We see that hope every day in the stories we highlight where ordinary people step up to become heroes to those in need. So, join us on Thursday, April 2 for our ABC11 Together Virtual Food Drive and give hope to those that need it the most. This is our community and we’re in this together.
In response to COVID-19, as a Food Bank we have made the decision to cancel this year’s Chef’s Feast.
Right now we are asking companies if they can make a financial donation or host a virtual food drive. As much as traditional food drives are needed right now, we know it may not be possible to organize and facilitate. Remember that with financial donations we can push that dollar further, securing $10 worth of food for every dollar donated. We’re in close touch with the public-school systems in our area, who themselves are working on a plan to keep children fed. Every year, we come together to #StopSummerHunger. This is not a normal year. Because of COVID-19, summer hunger started early.
When school is out we know that families struggle to keep food on the table. Children and teens who are part of free and reduced-cost breakfast and lunch programs often no longer receive those meals. There are increased expenses for childcare when school is out, and the cost of utilities rise along with temperatures. Budgets for so many families are already stretched thin, and the stress of covering these additional costs is very real.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis means more people than ever are facing hunger each day. Parents and caregivers have lost their jobs and healthcare. Schools have been closed, and in many cases unable to continue providing meals to children, since mid-March. Summer hunger started early this year.
Together we can help ease the burden on families and ensure growing children get the nourishment they need to grow, play, and learn. Our #StopSummerHunger goal this year is to raise 4.4 million meals.
What the Food Bank is doing:
In the Food Bank’s 34-county service area, just over 300,000 (1 in 5) children are eligible for free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch- and in some cases, those meals haven’t been available since mid-March. With our many partners, the Food Bank is working provide as many of those meals as possible to children and teens for as long as needed, and have opened more than 30 free meal sites since April.
In addition, we are distributing thousands of family-sized boxes, each containing 20 meals, to our partners operating pantries and soup kitchens, to school districts for children and families, and to seniors.
How you can help the Food Bank meet the increased need:
- Donate funds – Because of the strength of community relationships, the Food Bank can stretch the gift of a single dollar to provide 5 meals worth of food for a neighbor. And during the months of June and July, your donation is DOUBLED – meaning every dollar can provide 10 meals for the community.
- Involve your friends – Want to mobilize your neighborhood, church group, or family? Holding a Virtual Food Drive is a great way to help – while practicing social distancing. Visit foodbankcenc.org/vfd to get started!
- Donate time – If you are a healthy adult and want to volunteer, you can self-schedule a shift at foodbankcenc.org/volunteer. Current volunteer sessions are being kept much smaller than traditional volunteer groups to best accommodate social distancing. We are also limiting volunteering to ages 18-60 at this time, to best protect vulnerable populations.
- Donate food – We’re always in need of the types of shelf-stable items that you pick up for your own family: things like peanut butter, canned tuna fish and chicken, soup, pasta, and canned fruits and veggies.
