2015-08-23T20:31:42-04:00

Over half of all the children in our 34-county service area depend on the meals provided by their school as their primary source of food. While school cafeterias were closed this summer, we served more than 220,000 meals to 5,500 children through our Kids Summer Meals program. At more than 130 churches, schools, community centers, [...]

This Morning at Breakfast

2015-07-02T11:23:49-04:00

This morning these children ate their breakfast at a Kids Summer Meals site in Durham. Their favorite part of the meal? Pouring the milk into the cereal. After they finished eating, they got to go outside and play. A boy finishes his cereal while sitting next to his brother at a Kids Summer Meals site. [...]

How a Boy Helped Feed His Family

2015-06-24T16:10:56-04:00

By Tyler Weidig, Kids Summer Meals Program Supervisor A young boy sat quietly at a table as he politely but quickly devoured a sandwich at a small community center in southeast Durham. It was lunchtime and he was out of school for the summer. After he finished his meal, he quietly stood up from the [...]

One More Lunch till Summer

2015-06-07T20:01:48-04:00

On the final day of the school year, many children in school will fidget in their desks, anxiously awaiting their beloved summer break. But 175,000 children across central & eastern North Carolina have something else on their mind: Will my family have enough food to eat this summer? Just over 300,000 (1 in 5) children in our 34 county service area depend on the meals provided by their school as their primary source of food. For so many of them, the breakfast served in their classroom, the free meal at lunchtime, and the two days worth of food given to them every Friday are a lifeline.

Why Hot Summer Meals are a Big Deal

2014-08-03T20:22:45-04:00

Driving through Goldsboro, abandoned, broken-down warehouses pass by. It’s a quiet drive, peaceful even. And yet the decaying buildings serve as a reflection, a reminder, of the difficult circumstances that many people struggle with in this city. According to US Census data, 24.6 percent of people in Goldsboro live in poverty, compared to 21 percent [...]

The Problem with Getting Seconds

2014-07-17T15:46:45-04:00

By Nicole Harris, Summer Food Service Program Supervisor    That's me at one of our summer feeding sites! These days most of my time at work isn’t actually spent at the Food Bank. Instead I’m in the car—my mobile office if you will—driving from one summer feeding site to another. From June through [...]
