Black History and the Fight to End Hunger

Since 2008, the Food Bank has partnered with local organizations to serve meals and snacks to school-age children through our Kids Summer Meals program. Meal sites are located at easily- accessible locations including community centers, churches, and summer camps during months when schools are closed — providing nutritious food options along with outdoor recreation and summer reading initiatives.

Turning Point Community Development Corporation (CDC) is among these incredible partners, helping children in Vance County and beyond build confidence and lasting friendships through fun, hands- on learning. Turning Point’s Executive Director, Chalis Henderson, and her team provide nutritious meals for kids and teens in an area where 1 in 5 people face food insecurity.

We try to make our vegetables and our produce look like a grocery store. And the dignity of choice, I can't say enough about that. Barbara [can] come in and choose, and not be overwhelmed, and [...] have things that are first quality.

Chalis Henderson, Executive Director of Turning Point Community Development Corporation (CDC), was born into a legacy of service. As the daughter of two pastors, some of her first childhood memories were preaching to her stuffed animals.

Now, her organization helps children in rural communities have a powerful voice of their own. Their Creating Success Education Center is a licensed preschool with a focus on community service and exploration. Turning Point also offers after-school programs that provide homework help and skill-building workshops.

Food access is a core part of Turning Point's work. Children's programs offer meals and snacks, and their pantry provides fresh produce. Chalis calls the pantry "boutique-style" since families can shop for the food they like to eat.

Our goal is to really increase and improve the health outcomes in our community through our food distribution services.
