Resources to Help #StopSummerHunger in Lee County

Close to 3,500 school-aged children in Lee County don't know where their next meal might come from.

That's 1 out of every 5 kids and teens in our area.Ā

The challenges grow when school breakfast, lunch, and snacks are no longer available — and many parents and caregivers have to come up with 10 or more additional meals per week, per child when school is out. This makes the summer months among the most difficult times of year to keep food on the table.

The Food Bank network is here to help.

Local pantries, meal sites, and drive-up locations are moving mountains to ensure nutritious food reaches families throughout the region. And together we offer a host of additional programs to help fill the meal gap when schools are closed. So whether you live in the city, the suburbs, or in our rural and remote areas, know that food is available this summer!

Seven-day meal kits are available in Lee County.

We're excited to join our longtime partners at Christians United Outreach Center (CUOC) to offer take-home meal kits for families in Lee County. Each kit offers seven days of breakfast and lunch options for families supporting kids and teens. Items include cereal, milk, peanut butter, applesauce, breakfast bars, yogurt, trail mix, pretzels, and more. Check out the video to view a sample box.

Stop by any of the locations below to pick up your weekly box on Tuesdays through July 28.Ā

Due to federal rules, participating children must be present to receive their kit. All locations are equal opportunity providers — and all are welcome regardless of faith, race, gender, ethnicity, ability, or national origin.

You Can Take Action to #StopSummerHunger

If you’re in a position to help, there are concrete ways to have an impact right now. Your support helps area pantries, free food markets and meal sites ramp up local efforts while school is out:

During our #StopSummerHunger campaign, all donations matched through July 31. That means very dollar fuels 6 meals!

In the average volunteer shift, a single person will sort and pack enough food to fuel more than 160 meals for local families.

Advocate for investments to stop summer hunger. No child in our community should go hungry — and state and federal leaders must act.
