Our Statement on USDA Elimination of Vital Hunger Data

For generations, the State Fair has brought our community together to celebrate the best of North Carolina — our people, our traditions, and the generosity of our communities.

One of the most meaningful traditions at the Fair is a longstanding partnership between Smithfield Foods and the Food Bank: Hunger Relief Day.

On Thursday, October 22, fairgoers can donate six non-perishable food items in exchange free admission to the fair.

Crawford said the Salvation Army was designed to meet human needs without discrimination.

“Anyone who comes here with a need, whatever it may be – If it’s food or housing, healthcare – anything somebody needs, our job is to find a way to meet their needs without discrimination,” he said.

The Salvation Army offers programs and assistance for people from all backgrounds and walks of life.

As we highlight Hispanic Heritage Month, Crawford said Hispanic culture is one they like to focus on most.

“We have people from all over South America, Central America and even North America who are Hispanic and Spanish-speaking people, and the Salvation Army is a home to them, because this is a place where they can go to receive their needs,” Crawford said.

Spanish-speaking staff and volunteers assist with programming for the food pantry or housing assistance. Staff also assist with the Angel Tree adoption program, which Crawford said serves more than 60% of their Hispanic population.

Salvation Army staff and volunteers also help answer questions and make everyone feel welcome in the language they are most comfortable with.

But without the Food Bank's help, Crawford said this work would not be possible.

“The people who come here depend on the Food Bank because that is the need that people are missing so often,” he said, adding that having the proper food is a priority.

“Because sometimes just because they have access to food, the food may not be the right thing for them,” he continued.

He said he hopes that one day, the community will no longer need it.

“I hope that people will help us go out of business,” Crawford said.

Until then, he said the work they do relies on the community's support.

“We need help,” he continued. “We need somebody that can help the people who are going through desperate situations.”

For anyone in a position to give, it’s not too late to make a difference on Hunger Relief Day!
