The Salvation Army of Wake and Lee Counties Serve Latine Communities With Cultural Food Access

Maj. Joseph Crawford shared that the Salvation Army was designed to meet human needs without discrimination.

Anyone who comes here with a need, whatever it may be – If it’s food or housing, healthcare – anything somebody needs, our job is to find a way to meet their needs without discrimination.

– Major Joseph Crawford Area Commander, The Salvation Army of Wake County

The Salvation Army offers programs and assistance for people from all backgrounds and walks of life.

As we highlight Hispanic Heritage Month, Crawford said Latine culture is one they like to focus on most.

ā€œWe have people from all over South America, Central America, and even North America who are Hispanic and Spanish-speaking people, and the Salvation Army is a home to them, because this is a place where they can go to receive their needs."

Spanish-speaking staff and volunteers assist with food pantry programming and housing assistance. Staff also facilitate the Angel Tree adoption program, which Crawford said serves more than 60% of their Latine clients.

Salvation Army staff and volunteers help answer questions and make families feel welcome in the language they are most comfortable with.Ā

But without the Food Bank's help, Crawford said this work would not be possible.

ā€œThe people who come here depend on the Food Bank because that is the need that people are missing so often."

ā€œBecause sometimes just because they have access to food, the food may not be the right thing for them,ā€ he continued.Ā

He said he hopes that one day, the community will no longer need it.

ā€œI hope that people will help us go out of business."

Until then, the work they do relies on community support.

ā€œWe need help,ā€ he continued. ā€œWe need somebody that can help the people who are going through desperate situations.ā€Ā
