Sustainer Spotlight: Carol Supports the Wilmington Community By Giving Back

Throughout Hunger Action Month, we encourage your friends, family, and networks to Donate, Volunteer, Advocate, and Vote. Our 30 Ways in 30 Days calendar is full of simple ideas for taking action all month long.

We have a goal of bringing on 50 new sustainers in 30 days during September. Carol Durant is a monthly sustainer who donates each month to the Food Bank. By providing a monthly gift, you can sustain the Food Bank's work to end hunger for good.

I’ve always had the belief that a single person cannot do everything needed to eliminate a problem. But that every person can do at least one thing to work toward lessening a problem.Ā

Hunger can impact anyone, at any time. It’s a hard reality that inspired Carol to take action.

Carol Durant and her husband first began volunteering with the Food Bank after moving to Wilmington just before the COVID-19 pandemic.  She saw hunger in her community and wanted to make a difference.Ā

ā€œI mean, we know it’s there; we just don’t understand why it exists with all the resources and wealth this country has.ā€Ā

The couple volunteered in the warehouse at the Marsteller Street location before the Food Bank expanded and relocated to Greenfield Street.

ā€œIt’s a great opportunity for us to work there and do what we can to help out."

She says this is what keeps her coming back each week.

ā€œIt kind of gives you a good feeling," she shared.

Being a volunteer and a monthly sustainer is a way of giving back.

ā€œI feel like we’re blessed ... We have what we need; we have food, but a lot of people out there don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and that’s a scary thing.ā€Ā

As grocery prices and the cost of living continue to climb, monthly donors can sustain the Food Bank's work to provide meals for local families during the greatest hunger crisis in a generation.Ā

ā€œI’ve always had the belief that a single person cannot do everything needed to eliminate a problem. But that every person can do at least one thing to work toward lessening a problem.ā€Ā

For those who cannot afford to donate financially, Carol encourages Food Bank supporters to give their time and volunteer.

It’s not important for people to know who you are, but just that they can take comfort in the fact that someone out there is trying to help.

Take Action to Support Local Hunger Relief Efforts

In the average volunteer shift, a single person will sort and pack enough food to fuel more than 160 meals for local families.

No one in our community should go hungry — and we need state and federal leaders to invest in local farms and families.
