Our Statement on USDA Elimination of Vital Hunger Data
A New Record for Service During National Volunteer Week
For over 30 years, Food Lion and the Food Bank have moved mountains together keep food flowing to people and communities who need it most. This year's Food Lion Feeds Volunteer Day brought our shared effort to new heights with teammates devoting more than 2,000 volunteer hours in a single day day!
Food Lion volunteers came from far and wide April 21 to help end hunger across central and eastern North Carolina.
Teammates filled our volunteer centers and outdoor spaces at all six Food Bank branches to sort and pack produce, tend to our community gardens, and prepare nutritious meals through our production kitchen. Some just wanted to give back to the community. Others held memories of receiving food assistance as a child when money was tight. Many were concerned about pending cuts to SNAP and WIC and the impact on local families.
No matter the motivation, hundreds of Food Lion champions came together for a common cause: so that no one has to face the impossible choice between dinner and rent.
– Kevin Durkee Food Lion ManagerAt Food Lion, we care deeply about the families we serve, and today is about setting them up for success in life. When we come together like this, it’s more than volunteer hours or meals – it’s about helping ease the worry of how someone will put food on the table, helping bridge that gap for a family going through a tough time, and making sure people feel supported in their own communities.

– Amy Beros Food Bank President & CEOEvery pantry I visit, without fail, someone brings up Food Lion. A story about an associate who went above and beyond. A load of protein that showed up right when they needed it. A relationship that feels real, not transactional. That’s the kind of partnership Food Lion built with us.
