State Food Banks Set To Receive Nearly 3 million Eggs Thanks To Support From Attorney General Jeff Jackson

We sincerely thank Attorney General Jeff Jackson and the Department of Justice team for helping state food banks receive nearly 3 million eggs for families facing food insecurity!

Together, we can fight hunger across the state by working with elected leaders for a common cause. 

For food banks across North Carolina, a delivery of nearly 3 million eggs comes at an incredibly important time. Eggs are one of the foods families ask for most frequently at local pantries and no-cost markets. They’re nutritious, versatile, and a great source of protein — exactly the kind of food families want to put on their tables and the kind of fresh, healthy food that food banks work hard to provide.

This was made possible by Attorney General Jeff Jackson and his work with Cal-Maine Foods to make this donation a foundational piece of a recent settlement with three egg producers. We need this support now more than ever.

Right now, more than 1.7 million people across our state are facing hunger. That’s the highest level we’ve seen in at least a generation. That means one out of every six people we pass at the grocery store, see at the park, or sit beside in a waiting room may not know where their next meal is coming from.

We’ve seen that need skyrocket over the summer months when schools are closed, and utility bills rise sharply. Children and seniors and working parents alike face greater challenges than any other time of year. And increasingly, the people turning to our network of local pantries and meal sites are working adults who are doing all they can to make ends meet and still finding that their paychecks simply don’t stretch far enough.

The cost of groceries, fuel, housing, utilities, and other essentials continues to put enormous pressure on household budgets. That’s especially true here in the Triangle. And when those costs rise, food is often one of the few places families feel they can cut back. That’s why a delivery like this matters.

Thanks to Attorney General Jackson, this is the first of many deliveries that will ultimately help bring millions of eggs to food banks and communities across North Carolina. This delivery will reach local families through our network of local partners, staff, and volunteers who will help move these eggs from trucks and pallets into grocery bags and kitchen tables across our state.

This is a powerful example of what can happen when resources make an immediate difference for families. And we’re all incredibly grateful to play a part in this work.
