Each year, supporters across Central and Eastern North Carolina volunteer answer Dr. King’s call to serve in ways that change our world for the better.
One of our incredible volunteers, Hoon Kong, recently shared why he volunteers at the Food Bank’s Greenville Branch on MLK Day and beyond.
“This is a day dedicated to commemorating the life of one of the greatest recognized American heroes in history. This day is reserved to celebrate the life and accomplishments of a man, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who dedicated his life to serving his people for the greater common good — a man who made countless selfless sacrifices to bring about a profound impact for the future of the American people.
“The way Dr. King even endured persecution and time in prison reminds me of the selfless and sacrificial life of the apostle Paul, another hero in history who also sacrificed so much of his life to serve his people and share the ultimate message of hope and love. This is why I choose to volunteer on this day, as I reflect upon the humble servitude that characterized the life of MLK.
“Every day, there are people throughout this country who experience the effects of food insecurity and are struggling to live the quality of life that they want to live. These are our fellow brothers and sisters, some of whom rely upon the selfless service of volunteers like us to make ends meet and to put food on the table for every meal.
“The fight against food insecurity never takes a day off, and I want to do my part in eliminating this critical need in our society for good. I want to carry the same determination and commitment that led MLK to fight for the inalienable and justified rights of his people, as we recognize that all Americans should never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.
“On a day where we remember and celebrate a life of service, I choose to volunteer on this day to celebrate and promote service as a way to serve the greater needs of the common people, specifically the people of Central and Eastern North Carolina.”
Volunteers are critical to the Food Bank’s vision of a future where no one goes hungry — and we couldn’t do this work without dedicated supporters like Hoon Kong.
A single volunteer will sort and pack enough food in one shift to fuel more than 160 meals for local families. Combined, these efforts add the capacity of 78 full-time staff last year…and with your help, we might reach a new record in 2025!
