2017-04-05T12:03:05-04:00

In March, University of Georgia students in the IMPACT program spent their spring break learning about pressing social issues and addressing community needs through service. After volunteering at our Durham Branch, Monica Cheung reflected on the experience. Basmati rice. Organic Mac n’ Cheese. These items and other donated pantry staples zoomed past my eyes as [...]

Three Kids Who Are Especially Awesome

2016-04-16T11:05:04-04:00

What motivates people to volunteer? Many feel compassion, a sense of community, and a desire to give to those less fortunate than themselves. We are continually in awe of our volunteers as they give up their free time, and instead work hard to help someone they will likely never meet. So you can imagine our amazement when [...]

How a Boy Helped Feed His Family

2015-06-24T16:10:56-04:00

By Tyler Weidig, Kids Summer Meals Program Supervisor A young boy sat quietly at a table as he politely but quickly devoured a sandwich at a small community center in southeast Durham. It was lunchtime and he was out of school for the summer. After he finished his meal, he quietly stood up from the [...]

One More Lunch till Summer

2015-06-07T20:01:48-04:00

On the final day of the school year, many children in school will fidget in their desks, anxiously awaiting their beloved summer break. But 175,000 children across central & eastern North Carolina have something else on their mind: Will my family have enough food to eat this summer? Just over 300,000 (1 in 5) children in our 34 county service area depend on the meals provided by their school as their primary source of food. For so many of them, the breakfast served in their classroom, the free meal at lunchtime, and the two days worth of food given to them every Friday are a lifeline.

How Our Volunteers Feed Local Families

2015-04-20T20:09:50-04:00

Without the hard work of dedicated and compassionate individuals, families, and corporate groups, we could not provide food to thousands of food insecure households in our service area. Our army of volunteers almost double our workforce, adding the equivalent of [...]
