Since its founding 30 years ago, Hunger Relief Day at the State Fair has grown to become the largest single-day food drive in the region.
In that time, fairgoers have donated enough food to fuel more than five million meals for North Carolina families — and had a lot of fun along the way with free admission to the fair.
This year’s Hunger Relief Day is set for Thursday, October 24. And we’re excited to work with our partners at Smithfield Foods and supporters across the state to devote all proceeds to Western North Carolina families impacted by Hurricane Helene. Â
Most Needed Items in Western NC
The devastation across the western half of the state has been absolutely heartbreaking. Along with significant damage to countless homes and businesses, heavy rain and flooding took a toll on our food assistance infrastructure throughout the region. Food Banks statewide are working together to support our colleagues as they rebuild and restock — matching food and supplies with community-specific needs and distribution capacity. That’s where you come in!Â
In the aftermath of a major storm, many families are living in shelters or hotels. Those whose homes are still standing may not have consistent access to power or cooking fuel.
When considering the six items you’ll bring in exchange for free admission, keep in mind that specific products are most helpful to families out west:Â
- Peanut butter and jams (larger plastic jars)Â
- Chicken, tuna, or salmon (in pouches or pop-top cans)Â
- Ravioli and other ready-to-heat meals (in pop-top cans)Â
- Crackers (boxes or sealed containers)Â
- Dried or canned fruit (sealed containers or pop-top cans)Â
- Granola or protein bars (boxes with individually-wrapped contents)Â
Volunteer to Support Relief Efforts
With thousands of supporters donating 200,000+ meals of food, Hunger Relief Day is a huge undertaking. This year’s event in support of Western NC is likely to be our biggest yet — and we can’t do it without the support of incredible community volunteers. Volunteer at the State Fair to support our relief efforts and get free admission!
